The more straightforward option is the voltage-based monitor, often found in many mobile power applications. This monitor tracks the real-time voltage of the battery and uses that information to estimate the state of charge. However, it falls short when it comes to precisely measuring the state of charge for lithium-ion batteries, particularly in the range from 100% to 10%, where the voltage difference is minimal (unlike lead-acid batteries). This discrepancy becomes more apparent when the lithium-ion battery reaches about 10-20%. So, if you want a monitor that can accurately gauge whether your lithium-ion batteries are at 45% or 85% state of charge, Victron battery monitors, which are shunt-based, are the way to go. Plus, they’re versatile enough to work with both lithium and lead-acid systems.

    SmartShunt serves as a great replacement for a BMV battery monitor, particularly in systems where monitoring is crucial and a display isn’t a top priority. Additionally, it helps minimize wiring for a cleaner setup.

    The SmartShunt is a widespread alternative to the BMV monitors. It includes all of the BMV-712 battery monitor settings and features except one. Your phone acts as a display where you can pull all the necessary information.

    How to wire Victron battery monitor

    Before installing, ensure you have all the parts you ordered. Essential components include wires like the RJ12 cable that connects the shunt to the display if applicable, or positive wires. When you get the BMV-712 bundle, it should come with the following components: Shunt, Display, RJ12 cable for the shunt-to-display connection, and two positive power supply cables. Remember that monitoring a single battery bank requires just one of the positive supply cables. On the shunt, you’ll find clear labels for “BATT” and “LOAD.” Ensure the “BATT” side is connected to the main terminal of the battery, while the “LOAD” side should gather all the negative runs or connect to one negative battery run coming from a negative busbar.

    The SmartShunt wiring mirrors that of the BMV series bundles, except that a separate display isn’t required. In our experience working with clients at SunnyWell, we’ve noticed a common problem: DIY enthusiasts often fail to position the shunt correctly. Surprisingly, even experienced electricians may make this mistake. The issue is that not all negative power cables pass through the shunt. It’s important to highlight this key point: Victron battery monitor shunt, including the SmartShunt, must be positioned between all system negative wires and the main battery bank’s negative terminal. Failure to do so can result in miscalculations of the state of charge because there might be a hidden current charge or discharge bypassing the shunt. As a result, it won’t accurately accumulate and perform calculations for all currents flowing in and out. If you suspect that the battery monitor isn’t displaying the correct state of charge, the first step is to examine the wiring. The diagram above illustrates the right setup.

    How to configure Victron battery monitor (including SmartShunt)

    Once you’ve confirmed that all components are correctly wired and powered up, the next step is to configure the device using the VictronConnect App. You can download the app on your mobile device by clicking here and download the app first. Open the app and choose your device, as shown in the images below.

    Common issues/misconceptions and tricks to resolve Victron battery monitor settings

    If you battery display doesn’t power up:

    1. If the display or shunt is completely dead, it’s likely a result of a reverse polarity connection or a blown fuse on the positive cable.
    2. Next, verify if the UPS cable is the original one and if it is correctly positioned in both the shunt and the monitor. This is a key connection of the power source for a monitor. If it’s not the original cable, that could potentially be the issue.

    If you believe the monitor doesn’t show the right battery state of charge

    1. Ensure that no loads or charging sources are bypassing the shunt.
    2. Check whether the Charged Voltage setting or the Charged detection time matches the specifications outlined in the table above.

    If you’re having trouble connecting your phone to the Victron battery monitor or SmartShunt via Bluetooth:

    1. Confirm that you have a “Smart” Victron product with a Bluetooth symbol.
    2. Ensure your product is within range.
    3. Keep in mind that only one phone can be connected to a product at a time, so check that no other phone is already connected.
